Many types of bacteria can be present in water, including the potentially fatal Legionella.

Neglected water tanks are extremely high-risk areas for the spread of disease, as bacteria can proliferate in conditions where systems have deteriorated, such as where sediment and sludge have built which can act as a nutrient.

Tank cleaning and disinfection should ideally take place every year and when part of the water system has been substantially altered, after an outbreak or suspected outbreak of Legionella, and when a risk assessment or inspection finds it necessary.

The process involves the tank being drained and treated with sodium hypochlorite or hydrogen peroxide, before being refilled with fresh water and tested.  If necessary samples will be taken for analysis.
